USA TARIFFS EXPLAINED

US Duties & Tariffs, made simple

Whether you're across the street or across the Atlantic, you're part of the House of Valerie family. US import rules changed again on 24 July 2026, so here's a clear, no-jargon guide to what it means and how we keep your costs as low as possible.

Paid at checkout

All duties are calculated and prepaid when you order, nothing extra to pay on delivery.

Royal Mail first

Free shipping over $499

Enjoy free shipping on US orders over $499 when sent via Royal Mail.

What changed on 24 July 2026

Duties are now worked out item by item

The US has replaced the old flat rate on postal parcels. Instead, each piece is now charged its own duty rate, based on what it is and where it was made. For some items that means a little more than before, so we've updated our checkout to show you the correct, up-to-date amount every time, with no surprises later.

How it works

Since August 2025, all orders entering the US are subject to import duties set by US Customs. The amount depends mostly on the country of origin (where a piece is made) and the type of item, not where it ships from.

What affects your duty

  • Where it's made, UK & European-made pieces usually attract lower rates; items made in places such as China can be higher.
  • What it is, different product types carry different rates.
  • How it ships, Royal Mail is typically far cheaper than express couriers.

The good news

  • Because we're a UK store, the 20% UK VAT is removed from your order, which offsets a large part of any US duty.
  • We structure every parcel as cost-effectively as we can, so you never pay more than you need to.

Your shipping options

The way your order travels makes a real difference to what you pay in duty.

Delivery method Typical duty cost Extra fees When you pay
Royal Mail → USPS Recommended Lower None in most cases Prepaid at checkout, nothing on delivery
Express courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS) Higher May include handling / brokerage fees Often collected on delivery

Royal Mail is available for most orders within certain size and value limits. For larger or heavier orders an express courier may be needed, if you'd like to use DHL, just contact us and we'll talk through the options.

Questions, answered

Will I have anything to pay on delivery?
No. With Royal Mail, all duties and taxes are calculated and collected at checkout and shown as a separate line before you confirm, so there's nothing to pay when your parcel arrives.
Why is my duty higher than before?
From 24 July 2026 the US charges each item its own duty rate rather than one flat rate on postal parcels. Depending on the piece and where it was made, that can be a little higher than you may have seen previously. The figure shown at checkout is always the correct, current amount.
Are duties refundable?
Import duties collected at checkout are non-refundable from our end, Royal Mail, USPS and US Customs can't process refunds via the retailer. You may be able to claim directly from US Customs & Border Protection, and we'll happily provide any documentation you need. Just email us with your order number.
Can I still use DHL or another courier?
Yes, just contact us before ordering and we'll discuss the available options. Do bear in mind express couriers usually carry higher duties and may add handling fees.
What about larger orders?
For higher-value orders, US Customs may ask for a little extra information before releasing your parcel. This is standard, and your courier will contact you directly if anything is needed.
