CHECK, MATE! NEW SEASON CHECKS

Spring introduces a renewed focus on pattern, and this season the check re-emerges with a sharper point of view. At House Of Valerie, the latest edit brings together pieces from MAMA B and ANNETTE GÖRTZ, offering a perspective that feels grounded yet forward in its execution. Rather than leaning on tradition, these designs reinterpret the check through proportion, fabric and tone, creating something that feels relevant now.

Across this selection, there is a natural ease to how each piece fits into a wider wardrobe. The interplay between softer palettes and more defined patterns allows for versatility, making these pieces as adaptable as they are distinctive.

HERITAGE STYLING

Warm, grounded tones by ANNETTE GÖRTZ introduce this first chapter, where brown-based checks feel rooted yet refreshed through modern silhouettes.

There is an immediate softness to the Tonic Top in Brown, where a warm beige base is layered with a darker brown check that appears gently diffused across the fabric. The oversized cut gives it movement, while the slash neckline keeps the shape open and relaxed. A subtle tie detail at the hemline adds a point of interest without interrupting the flow. It works particularly well styled loosely over the Laos Trouser, allowing the proportions to feel balanced, though it also lends itself to contrast when paired with darker, more structured pieces.

More definition comes through in the Laos Trouser, where the same colour palette is sharpened into a clearer, more pronounced check. The wide barrel leg silhouette creates volume, but the structured waistband and fixed turn-up hem keep everything controlled. This piece anchors softer layers effortlessly, making it ideal with the Tonic Top for cohesion or with a minimal shirt to let the pattern stand out.

Function meets versatility in the Asta Jacket, which brings a practical edge to the collection. Crafted from a lightweight, showerproof fabric, it offers protection without bulk. One side presents a clean, solid brown finish, while the reverse reveals a check lining that mirrors the tones seen elsewhere. Turning back the cuffs exposes this contrast, adding a subtle styling detail. Worn open or layered over dresses, it adapts easily to changing conditions.

Texture becomes more prominent in the Lasse Dress, where a sharper check sits across a structured A-line shape. The medium-weight fabric holds the silhouette, whilst ruched detailing introduces movement across the surface. A single zipped pocket adds a utilitarian note, grounding the design. It feels complete when worn alone, but gains another dimension when layered beneath outerwear.

BE BOLD, IN BLUE

A cooler palette shifts the focus, softening the check into something more understated while maintaining the same clarity of design.

Rendered in a muted blue tone, the Lasse Dress in Light Blue takes on a quieter presence. The base carries a softened, grey-blue quality, overlaid with a gentle check that introduces warmth without strong contrast. This interplay allows the ruched detailing to remain visible, adding texture rather than distraction. It lends itself to lighter styling, whether worn simply or layered with tonal pieces.

In trouser form, the Laos style translates this palette into a more structured silhouette. The softened check sits across the wide barrel leg, creating a sense of movement without overwhelming the shape. There is a slightly faded quality to the tones, which gives the piece a relaxed edge. Paired with crisp whites or similar hues, it forms part of an easy, cohesive look.

MINIMAL CHECKS

With MAMA B, the focus turns to subtle patterning, where checks are woven quietly into natural fabrics.

Tailoring takes a lighter approach in the Adel E Jacket in Calce, where a soft camel tone forms the base. A faint grid runs through the linen, adding depth while remaining understated. The clean, structured fit makes it an effective layering piece, equally suited to relaxed trousers or worn alone for a more defined look. This piece is also available in darker tones, such as Antracite and Cumino, offering flexibility across wardrobes.

A more relaxed silhouette defines the Goccia E Waistcoat, where the check becomes slightly more visible against the Calce Teuse shade. The variation in tone gives the fabric a gentle dimension, while the dropped armholes and neat collar keep the shape easy. It layers naturally over shirts, but can also be styled as a standalone piece in warmer weather, and is available in alternative neutral tones, similarity to the Adel E Jacket.

Warmth comes through clearly in the Martedi E Overall in shade Cumino, where a tan-based shade is crossed with a subtle, lighter check. The oversized fit allows for movement, while adjustable straps and pleated pockets introduce structure where needed. The piece feels self-contained, requiring little more than a simple layer underneath. Other colour options within the range offer slightly cooler and darker interpretations.

Relaxed tailoring continues with the Lena E Trouser, where the drop-crotch silhouette creates a softer shape. The Cumino tone carries a similar warmth to the overalls, though it feels slightly richer, allowing the check to appear with more clarity. Styled with a clean top, it maintains a balanced, understated look, while alternative shades introduce variation.

A deeper palette defines the Rima E Trouser, where a charcoal base is intersected with a faint, lighter check. The contrast remains subtle, allowing the tapered balloon shape to stand out. The elasticated rear waistband ensures ease, whilst the darker tone grounds lighter layers. Lighter versions of this piece offer a softer alternative.

LAYERED IN CHECKS

Lightness becomes key, with semi-sheer fabrics allowing checks to build gradually through layering.

Transparency shifts the feel of the Pupi Top, where the Calce tone appears almost weightless against the skin. The check is present but softened by the fabric, creating a layered effect even when worn alone. In Grano, the colour warms slightly, offering a different direction within the same silhouette.

Volume and movement define the Pirri Shirt in Grano, where a pale, warm neutral with a hint of soft orange gives the check a subtle lift. The oversized cut and dropped back hemline create flow, while the semi-sheer fabric keeps it light. In Calce, it takes on a more neutral character, offering a quieter alternative.

Texture plays a central role in the Ottobre C Shirt, where crinkled cotton adds depth to a pale blue base. The check pattern feels more intricate here, almost finely drawn across the surface. A cascade collar softens the structure, making it an easy piece to layer.

Soft detailing shapes the Ora C Top, where a muted blue gingham pattern runs through the fabric. Frayed edges at the neckline and armholes introduce a subtle rawness, balanced by a ruffle detail through the centre. The tone mirrors that of the Ottobre shirt, creating continuity without repetition.

A slightly more structured approach appears in the Accesa C Shirt, where the same Celeste palette is interpreted through a crinkled cotton fabric. The check sits cleanly across the oversized shape, while the dropped back hemline and three-quarter sleeves maintain ease. Each version of this piece offers a slightly different take on the same colour story.

IN THE DETAILS

Accessories bring the story together, with the ANNETTE GÖRTZ Chico Scarf offering a final layer of pattern.

A warm interplay of pale and burnt orange tones defines this piece, where the check feels more expressive without losing refinement. The rectangular shape allows for versatile styling, whether wrapped loosely or draped over the shoulders. Raw edges add a subtle finish, keeping the design relaxed. Variations in Light Blue and Brown echo the palettes seen throughout the collection, making it easy to integrate into existing looks.
